About the Lecture
Martin Topinka of the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies will deliver the March 2017 TCD Lecture for Astronomy Ireland.
"Since their discovery in 1970', the nature of gamma-ray bursts have still boggled minds of astronomers and astrophysicists. I will review main achievements in shedding light to this phenomenon and our current understanding of these super powerful cosmological bursts."
About the Lecturer
Martin Topinka graduated from MFF UK (Prague, Czech Rep.) in Astronomy and Theoretical Astrophysics. He got Marie Currie 1 year fellowship at MPA (Garching, Germany) coding MHD simulations and obtained his PhD from UCD (Dublin, Ireland) where he worked under the supervision of prof. Lorraine Hanlon on the data analysis of short transients from INTEGRAL. Then he worked as a post-doc at UCD, being responsible for the Watcher robotic telescope in the GLORIA robotic telescope network. Then he spent 1 year post-doc at CTU (Prague, Czech Republic) in machine-learning applied to astronomy before joining DIAS.
After the lecture there will be a social reception in The Lombard
