Meteorites
Meteorites are pieces of solid matter originating from asteroids, comets or meteoroids that enter our atmosphere and survive burning up to hit the ground. Some are little grains of dust but other larger objects can cause significant damage when the land. They vary in composition from rock types to metallic. In this lecture Dr. Ian Sanders will talk about what we know about meteorites as well as the major impacts. He will also talk about what we can learn from studying these strange objects.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
DR. IAN SANDERS
Dr. Ian Sanders is not only Ireland’s foremost professional scientist in the field of meteorites but he is also highly regarded worldwide. Educated at St John’s College, Cambridge (1965-1971) he graduated with a BA MA and PhD in Mineralogy and Petrology. He has been employed as a lecturer in geology at Trinity College since 1971.
He did some of the professional scientific analysis on the last meteorite that fell on Irish soil (back in 1999).
